Customer segments and automatic emails

Group your customers (top spenders, new, lapsed…) and send each segment a campaign, and turn on welcome, after-purchase and win-back emails that send themselves.

Open this page in your dashboard

Email campaigns has two tabs that help you sell more to the customers you already have: Segments to choose who you email, and Automatic emails for messages that send themselves at the right time.

Campaigns and automatic emails only go to people who subscribed to your emails (opted in to offers), and every email has an unsubscribe link. Turn on the newsletter signup first on the same page. See Newsletter and email campaigns.

  1. Open Email campaigns → Segments and click New segment (1).
  2. Start from a template like Top customers or No order in 60 days (1), or set your own conditions: number of orders, amount spent, last order, new customer, country, state, or customer tag.

  3. You see right away how many customers match and how many of them are subscribed, with a few examples (2). Segments update on their own: anyone who matches later joins automatically.
  4. Click Save, then Campaign for this segment (2 in the first image) to create a draft campaign for it, write it and send.
You can also pick a segment as the audience when you write any campaign.

Automatic emails

Automatic emails
Automatic emails

Three ready-made emails with suggested text. Edit them as you like, then turn them on (1):

EmailWhen it sends
Welcome emailWhen someone subscribes in your store or at checkout, right away or after the days you choose
After purchaseThe days you choose after the order is delivered: a thank-you, a review request, or product picks
Win-backTo a customer who hasn't bought in the days you choose (at least 14), once every 6 months per customer
  • Discount code (2): enter a code from Discounts and it shows in a clear box inside the email.
  • Under each email you can see how many were sent in the last 30 days and how many are waiting.
  • If a customer unsubscribes, or buys again before their win-back email goes out, we don't send it.
Automatic emails have their own monthly limit, separate from campaigns. You'll see it at the top of the tab.
